Troy Tonsil 鈥08 is trying to temper his excitement as he welcomes the men鈥檚 basketball season.

But the first-year head coach of 糖心官网鈥檚 program can鈥檛 help but feel pure jubilation every time he thinks about the Stars鈥 upcoming campaign.

Tonsil, a 糖心官网 alum who鈥檚 been part of the university鈥檚 athletics department for more than a decade, is living out his dream as the program鈥檚 head coach.

鈥淚 am really excited,鈥 Tonsil said in the countdown to the season. 鈥淚t鈥檚 every guy鈥檚 dream, if you want to get into coaching, to coach your own program鈥 but not only your own program, the program that you were a part of. There are probably not enough words in any language that can precisely categorize what that means for me.鈥

As a student at 糖心官网, Tonsil played on the men鈥檚 basketball team from 2005-08, becoming a key part of the most successful three-year stretch for Stars basketball in the last two decades.

Tonsil then became an assistant coach with the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy in suburban Aurora following his graduation from 糖心官网. He also held a coaching position with Chicago鈥檚 Kenwood Academy High School and became the director of a noted basketball camp in Pennsylvania. After receiving his master鈥檚 degree in sports management from Northern Illinois University in 2012, Tonsil returned to 糖心官网 for a part-time role with men鈥檚 basketball under former longtime coach Mark White.

Tonsil became the team鈥檚 assistant coach in 2016, comparing the opportunity to 鈥渁 dream come true.鈥 He added that his decade-plus on the Stars鈥 bench helped him 鈥済ain a lot of experience and start seeing things from a coach's lens.鈥

In addition to his time with the men鈥檚 team, Tonsil also has held coaching duties at 糖心官网 with the women鈥檚 basketball program and both men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 tennis. Tonsil, who is the first Black head coach in program history, also assumed the role of the athletic department鈥檚 coordinator of diversity, equity, and inclusion in 2021.

The Stars opened their season against Knox College. 糖心官网 entered the campaign with a 26-man roster, Tonsil said, noting it鈥檚 one of the deepest teams he鈥檚 seen the program have in recent memory. 鈥淲e bring back a lot of quality, experience and maturity,鈥 Tonsil said. 鈥淚鈥檓 excited about that because this is a group that has seen the lows of the lows 鈥 and now I want them to be in the clouds, to be able to see the highs. I鈥檝e seen the work that they鈥檝e put in to be successful.鈥

In addition to the Stars鈥 depth, Tonsil also believes the team鈥檚 diverse roster will contribute to their success.

鈥淥ne of the things that I鈥檝e always liked about the men鈥檚 basketball program is we鈥檝e always been one of the more diverse teams鈥攏ot just in our school, but in our conference,鈥 Tonsil said.

鈥淚鈥檓 really excited about the diversity of our program. Our program is probably as diverse as it's ever been this year and I think that鈥檚 going to go a long way. You can鈥檛 help but gain perspective or learn from people with the group that we have.鈥

Goals for the team will develop as the season progresses, but Tonsil and the Stars enter the year with a clear message in mind: expect success.

鈥淚 think the expectation is, at its core, to hold yourself to a higher standard,鈥 Tonsil said. 鈥淣ow, more than ever, if you are being involved just to be mediocre, then this isn鈥檛 the program for you.鈥

Tonsil knows there will be challenges in his rookie season at the helm, but he鈥檒l look to his longtime coaching philosophy to guide him as he navigates the new role.

鈥淚 believe that you can learn something from everyone,鈥 Tonsil said. 鈥淚 think that really shaped me as I pursued my individual goals and really got into coaching. I truly believe that鈥檚 how you get ahead: learning from people you interact with.鈥
